Civil Asset Forfeiture seemed to start out as an additional punishment for those convicted of certain crimes like drug sales, more of a Criminal Asset Forfeiture. The logic being that if you are selling drugs and had stacks of money, a nice new car or cars beautiful house etc… and no “Job” it seemed pretty clear that you obtained those possessions from ill gained profits. so besides 5 years in prison or whatever punishment was on the books to selling that drug you also would loose those possessions as well. Again being an additional punishment’s for being found guilty of a crime. Fast forward to 2022 and we find it being used far more often without any charges being files. Just because you were traveling with a “Large” amount of cash on you the police will seized it with the claim that they think it was obtained illegally and leave you on the die of the road dock train station airport etc.. broke. Never filing a criminal charge against you!!
